Make a Difference! How much action can you see in just one weekend a month? Plenty-if you spend that weekend in the Coast Guard Reserve!
The Coast Guard Reserve offers you opportunities and experience not available in any other Reserve component.
Reserve Your Weekend:
Coast Guard Reservists spend an average of one weekend a month and two weeks a year performing duties vital to our nation's security. Reservists work alongside the 40,000 active duty Coast Guard men and women ensuring the safety of local communities. Reserve support is critical to meeting Coast Guard missions. Homeland Security, including maritime law enforcement, environmental protection, search and rescue, aids to navigation and port security are among the many missions the Coast Guard and Coast Guard Reserve do best.
Most Reservists belong to a unit in their community, or a unit close to their home.
If you live near a large port, you could be assigned to port security and monitor cargo operations or inspect U.S. and foreign vessels for safety violations and contraband.
If you live on the coast or near a large lake, you could be assigned to a Coast Guard search and rescue station. Your weekend may consist of rescuing distressed boaters, fighting pollution or keeping navigational aids functioning properly.
U.S. Coast Guard Reservists are also assigned to law enforcement duties. You may be trained to enforce offshore commercial fishing laws or responsible for stopping the smugglers that bring drugs, weapons or illegal aliens into U.S. waters.
The Coast Guard Reserve offers an opportunity to do work that is exciting, challenging and rewarding. Your contribution could significantly affect the safety and quality of life in your community. Not bad for one weekend a month!
Learn the Ropes:
The Coast Guard Reserve offers you career training and numerous opportunities while serving your country and community.
If you don't have a specialized skill, we'll teach you one. If you have an existing technical skill, we may be able to help you further develop that skill. We pay you while you learn!
There are many ways to broaden your skills in the Coast Guard Reserve. There are great opportunities for on the job training, special assignments and intensive training.
In most cases you will attend a school to learn your specialized skill, called a rating. You may qualify to receive training in such ratings as Marine Science Technician and become a leader in environmental response and clean up. You may qualify as a Boatswain's Mate and receive training and responsibility in all aspects of seamanship.
In addition to ratings available to both active and reserve members, there are two ratings available only to Reservists, Port Security Specialist and Investigator.
Reservists work in computer processing, mechanics, radio communications, administration and accounting, even food preparation. Reservists do it all.
The skills you learn in the Coast Guard Reserve will help you in your civilian career or can give you the edge necessary to build a career with better pay and a brighter future!
